philosophy of education
Education shouldn’t be rooted in the giving of answers, but in the transformative journey of learning. We do this together, side by side - teacher and student - the studio becoming a place where ideas evolve. Here, we learn not only vital skills and techniques, but also how to think, feel, and grow as individuals. Every brushstroke, every mark made, every experiment undertaken becomes part of a larger trek toward understanding ourselves and our place in the world around us.
We explore the foundations of this approach through three points of emphasis: HOW teaching is facilitated, WHAT the intention of learning is & and WHY this matters.
HOW is Process
Learning happens through experimentation and process. Exploration, risktaking, and embracing the uncertainty are all inherent in creative work. We are going to fail, and we will fail often. Failure is not just expected - it is essential. Each misstep, each unsuccessful attempt, is a vital step on the path toward growth and discovery. We gain resilience by viewing failure not as an endpoint, but as a stepping stone towards new solutions. This ability to learn from failure and to problem-solve fosters a deeper understanding of artistic techniques and concepts. Process infinitely above product.
WHAT is Lesson
What is being taught goes beyond technical skills. Yes there's color, design, composition, line - but the focus is on fostering expression and personal voice. It’s about empowering each student to communicate their unique perspectives through work. Art as both a visual language and a tool for inquiry, expanding the student’s visual vocabulary. Through diverse media, processes, perspectives, and concepts, we build the tools necessary to create thoughtful and authentic art.
WHY is Because
Because not doing it sounds so much worse.
Art lends itself to us for use in a place where creation, contemplation, and transformation take place. I try to exist as both facilitator and instigator of this process. Here, I hope students encounter the profound power of Art and allow it, in some way, to shape their identity, build a community, and connect with something larger than themselves. If borrowing Art for a little while helps us to grow - that’s the why, that’s the because.

“Art is a birth, and you can’t go to a teacher and find out how to be born…you have to struggle… until that image, the one that comes out of your need to create emerges.
